Premortal Spirit Creations

The Revelation 12 Flashback

Revelation 12 is a major flashback to the premortal existence. In the first 12 verses, John sees several great signs from that premortal period.

  • A woman, who represents the premortal church of God.

  • Her battle with the great red dragon, who represents Lucifer.

These great signs in heaven have their likenesses on earth, which John describes in Revelation 12:13–17:

  • The same woman again represents the earthly church of Jesus Christ in the meridian of time.

  • Satan’s earthly war against the ancient church after the crucifixion of Christ is a direct extension of the premortal war in heaven.

We know more about our premortal lives than we think, because everything premortal has its likeness on earth.

The Spirit Creation

Before there could be a premortal church of God in heaven, God’s spirit children had to be created. We call this a spirit creation, which is also in the likeness of, and perfect pattern for, the physical creation of all things.

This spirit creation took place eons of time before the physical creation and long before the conflict between the woman and the dragon during the Grand Council in Heaven.

The scriptures give only a glimpse of this event:

“All things were before created; but spiritually were they created and made according to my word.”
Moses 3:5

During the spirit creation:

  • God the Father was the creator and organizer of spirit matter called intelligence, which is eternal and uncreated.

  • From this unorganized material, God organized the spirit bodies of all plants, all animals, and worlds without number (Moses 1:38).

  • The spirit creation of all God’s children was an act of procreation that involved our Mother in Heaven.

  • The physical creation could occur only after the spirit creation, when the spirits of all things were clothed in physical element, also eternal and uncreated.

Spirit matter and physical matter are the elemental building blocks of creation. There is no such thing as immaterial matter (D&C 131:7), nor is creation ex nihilo (something from nothing).

Spirit Creations Are Multigenerational

The process of creation and procreation of spirits follows a perfect pattern that Gods have followed for many generations of spirit creations:

“The Father of our spirits has only been doing what his Progenitors did before Him.”
— Orson Pratt, The Seer 1 (September 1853): 134–35

A generation consists of people and things created by the same creator.

  • A single generation of spirit children are those who descend from the same Heavenly Father and Mother.

  • We are just one generation of many that have existed and will exist in the future.

  • Our Father in Heaven had a Heavenly Father and Mother (Revelation 1:6), and therefore there must be a Grandfather in Heaven as well.

Joseph Smith explained this principle in the King Follett Sermon:

“My object was to preach the scriptures, and preach the doctrine they contain, there being a God above, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ…. Where was there ever a son without a father? And where was there ever a father without first being a son?”
— Joseph Smith, Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, pp. 369–370, 373

These doctrinal truths are expressed in the familiar couplet revealed to Lorenzo Snow:

“As man now is, God once was; As God now is, man may be.”
Lorenzo Snow
